With the Slovak Republic beating Russia 64-61 earlier on in the day, Standard Life Great Britain Under-20 women knew that a win against Serbia would remove any pressure of needing a victory in their final game in order to ensure their Division A status.
A slow start for Great Britain on Friday saw them trail early on as Serbia led at the break 33-26.
The second half, however, showed Great Britain at their battling best as they refused to let Serbia run away with the game, eventually tying the contest up at 50 each. But less than 20 seconds after GB had tied the game for the first time, Serbia took control again, closing the game out on an 11-4 run, claiming a 71-59 victory and with it, top spot in Group D.
GB Coach, Frans Griffioen, said after the loss that his team are still feeling the effects of the injury bug which hampered much of his sides pre-tournament preparation.
"Our problem is that we are playing a small rotation, six or seven players. A lot of the players are playing a lot of minutes. We have to check to see if everybody will be fit to face Slovakia."
Great Britain's Jess Hurd was outstanding in the loss, leading all scorers with 25 points. Hurd also had nine rebounds (seven offensive). Colic lead Serbia with 24 points.
Standard Life Great Britain's final Group D game is on Saturday 18th August against the Slovak Republic. Tip-off is 12:45PM (UK time).
