Standard Life Great Britain Under-20 Women's midday game at Fönix Hall against Group D opponents, the Slovak Republic, represented GB's final chance at recording a victory and ensuring their status as a Division A team for next year.
But, as the final buzzer sounded and the scoreboard showed GB had lost, 74-61, it now means they face an uphill battle to preserve their top flight status.
The Slovak Republic scored the first points of the game and from that point on, never trailed, pushing the lead out to 14 at the start of the second half en route to a 13 point victory.
Great Britain shot an impressive 47.7% from the floor to keep within touching distance of their opponents but in the end, led by Zofia Hruscakova's team high 17 points, Slovakia were simply too good for Great Britain.
GB coach, Frans Griffioen, although disappointed that his side finished their Group D campaign winless, said he was still proud of the way his team performed.
"I talked with the Slovakian Coach after the game and he said to me 'You kept on fighting, you never gave up' and that was the truth. The girls worked very hard and I'm very proud of them."
Great Britain now move into Group G and face the three teams who finished bottom in Groups A, B and C as they compete against one another to remain in Division A next season.
GB's next game is Monday 20th August and will be against the fourth placed team in Group A.
