The Standard Life Great Britain Under-20 women's chances of winning Group G took a hit yesterday following their second loss in as many days, going down 68-47 to a well prepared Italian side who currently lead the group.
The loss for GB takes them to 0-2 in their group (0-5 in all games) and leaves them at the foot of the table but with four games still remaining.
Under difficult circumstances due to on-going injury issues, Great Britain struggled early on in the game, going behind 15-4 after only six minutes of the first quarter. But British resilience kicked in and heading into the second quarter, the Italian lead had been cut to only four.
The promise of a battling second quarter comeback though, was extinguished by the impressive Italians who poured on the pressure, heading into the break, leading 37-25.
The second half didn't get any easier for Great Britain despite the resilience of Jess Hurd (16 points, six rebounds) and Erin McGarrachan (eight points, 10 rebounds) and in the end, Italy closed out the game winning 68-47.
The Italians finished the game with three scorers in double digits, led by Giovanna Pertile who scored 17 points on 6/11 shooting.
Great Britain will regroup for Wednesday's game against Portugal, which is to be played at Olah Gabor Sports Hall. Tip-off is at 3:00pm (UK time).
