Freeland said: "I felt good about it (taking a summer off with the national team).
"Obviously, I would have loved to have played for my country and represent them at the EuroBasket, but it was a decision I had to make on a personal level to focus on my game over here."
There is one area in particular Freeland believes his attention lies: "I've been (saying) from pretty much last season, defense was my focal point of the summer."
And it seems his hard work is beginning to pay off with team mate and NBA star, LaMarcus Aldridge commenting on his efforts after a recent pre-season victory over Utah Jazz, Aldridge said: "I'm excited about what Joel Freeland did. All of those blocks and all of those contested (shots) at the rim - that's big time for me.
"I feel like if he can continue to do that all year, he's going to make our team better."
Freeland is making big strides in America with the Trail Blazers and will be hoping to keep his motivation and determination up as the NBA 2013/14 season approaches. Good luck to Freeland in the upcoming season.
