Matthew began his international career at Under-16 level with England in 2004, moving up to Under-18 level and then into the Under-20 ranks with Great Britain in 2008, where he was ranked fourth among all players in the European Championships in blocked shots with 1.6 per game, as well as 12th in scoring, including a 41-point haul against the Czech Republic.
His senior debut arrived in against Canada in 2010 and he held onto his place in the squad for the qualifiers for EuroBasket 2011.

Matthew started his career in the junior ranks with Brixton TopCats in his hometown of London, playing alongside GB team mates Ogo Adegboye and Eric Boateng. Bryan-Amaning made his professional debut in Turkey this season, signing for Ankara-based top division club Hacettepe Üniversitesi. Through the first 15 games in the league, he was averaging an impressive 11.6ppg and 5.0 rpg.
After attending high school in Connecticut, he won a scholarship to the University of Washington. Playing in NCAA Division I, he left the college as equal first in most games played (136), second in blocks (158) and 25th in point scored (1182). In his senior season, he was named the Pac-10 Conference's Most Improved Player, First Team All-Pac-10 and was an Honorable Mention in the conference’s All-Defensive Team. He went undrafted despite work-outs with several NBA teams.

Matthew says basketball has been his “one and only sporting love”. He regards GB team-mate Luol Deng as like a brother because of coming from the same area. Matthew has one elder brother and is close friends with Sacramento Kings guard Isaiah Thomas, his former college team-mate. He has one son.
Often known as MBA, his actual nickname is ‘Numbers’, given to him by close childhood friend Nicholas Aku.
