International Career:

A stand-out junior Richards represented England at Under-16 level (2006-7) and Under-18 in 2009 where he averaged 29ppg and 13rpg. Ryan made his senior Great Britain in 2011, scoring 16 points on debut against the Netherlands. He was the last cut in the GB senior men’s squad for EuroBasket 2011. Previously that summer, he had played for the GB Under-20 team at the Division B European Championships where he averaged 22.3 ppg, 8.1 rpg and 1.6 apg, including a 32 point, 14 rebound outing against Israel.

Club career:

Born in Chatham, Kent Ryan began his career in English Basketball League with Medway Park Crusaders, making his senior bow in Division 3 at the age of 14, averaged four points and four rebounds and helping the club to reach the final of the 2006 National Shield.

He left for Spain after accepting a place at Gran Canaria’s academy in 2006, playing for their Under-16 and Under-18 teams and winning the Spanish Junior Championship. That same season, he earned a place on the World Select team at the Nike Hoop Summit.

In 2007-8, he played with Canary Islands-based Aguimes but also made three appearances on loan with Real Madrid’s junior team in the Nike International Junior Tournament, averaging 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds. He moved to Belgium in 2008-09, making his senior club debut playing for Mons-Hainaut, averaging 5 points in just 6 minutes in three first team appearances. He played two games in Nike Junior International Tournament for German club Brose, averaging 16.5 points and 11.5 rebounds.

Returned to Gran Canaria in 2009-10, playing with its junior team in the EBA. He was later loaned to BBC Monthey of Switzerland, averaging 13.3 points, 5.2 rebounds before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.

In 2010, Richards was drafted into the NBA by the San Antonio Spurs (2nd round, 49th overall). He joined Switzerland’s Lugano Tigers for the 2011-12 campaign.

Personal:

Richards was forced to sit out the 2010-11 season to recover from surgery. His dream is to play in the NBA.

Trivia:

Ryan was selected to participate in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Europe programme in 2008.
