International Career:

Having practiced with the senior squad in 2010 and becoming one of Great Britain’s youngest-ever debutants in a friendly against Canada, van Oostrum made a major breakthrough in 2011, just weeks after playing at the Under-20 European Championships. In the EuroBasket finals in Lithuania, he played a tournament-high 23 minutes against Spain, contributing six assists. He was named as British Basketball’s Emerging Athlete for 2011, given to the country’s most outstanding young player. He missed out on the 2012 Olympic team but returns in 2013, fresh from being named as the Most Valuable Player of July’s U20 European Championships in Romania when he led GB to the final, averaging 26.8 ppg.

He made his international debut for England in the 2008 Under-16 European Championship but truly announced his arrival in the same tournament 12 months later, when he averaged 21.2 points per game.

Club career:

Vitoria (2013-), Caceres, Spain (loan, 2012-13), Tarragona, Spain (loan, 2011-12), Baskonia Vitoria, Spain (2009-11), Sheffield Sharks (2000-9)

Began his career in the junior teams at Sheffield Sharks at the age of 7 before signing for Spanish ACB club Baskonia Vitoria (Kutxa Laboral) in 2009. Spending his time initially between their junior teams and feeder club, Euskotren, van Oostrum helped Baskonia to the quarter-finals of the 2011 Spanish junior championship, ranking as the tournament’s top point guard. Having played for Baskonia’s senior side in a handful of friendlies before his 18th birthday, he was sent out on loan to the second-tier LEB Oro league for the 2011-12 campaign to Tarragona, and in 2012-13 to Caceres.  He was recalled to Vitoria’s senior squad for the 2013 ACB play-offs.
